At first I assume these mark the location of traffic fatalities, but Rob explains the truth: the memorials have been erected by locals, despairing at the fate of the river and the lakes. They stand not only as acts of mourning, but as monuments of indictment: the Darling .

Menindee is the oldest European settlement in western New South Wales, and the first town to be established on the Darling River.

The first European to visit the area was the surveyor and explorer Major Thomas Mitchell in He was followed by Charles Sturt in and the town was the advance base for the Burke and Wills expedition in LGA(s): Central Darling Shire. Menindee is also the oldest town on the Darling and the oldest town in western New South Wales.
